The Founding of Dondo
Dondo was born from the dreams of Chef Amina Ndungu, a culinary visionary raised in a small village near Eldoret, Kenya. As a child, Amina spent hours watching her grandmother grind spices and simmer stews over an open fire. Those moments ignited a passion that would shape her life. After studying at culinary institutes in Paris and Cape Town, and working in top restaurants across the continent, Amina returned to Nairobi with a bold idea — to create a restaurant that honors Africa’s diverse food traditions while pushing boundaries with modern innovation. In 2015, that idea became Dondo.
Culinary Philosophy
At Dondo, authenticity and creativity go hand in hand. We source spices from local markets, vegetables from Kenyan farms, and inspiration from every corner of Africa. Our chefs use traditional methods — like slow-cooking in clay pots — alongside cutting-edge techniques to craft dishes that surprise and comfort. From Ghanaian Groundnut Soup to Moroccan Tagine, our menu reflects the continent’s diversity.
Meet the Team
Our team is a family of passionate food lovers. Chef Amina leads with her expertise, joined by sous-chef Kwame Otieno from Ghana, pastry chef Leila Mwangi, and front-of-house manager Juma Kimani. Each brings unique skills and warmth to Dondo.
